During the “Off” instant, engineers measure the true pipe-to-soil potential without current interference β€” this “Off-potential” reading is the standard method for verifying that a pipeline meets NACE/ISO corrosion protection criteria. Without a timer, you can’t take reliable measurements.

When multiple engineers survey different sections of a long pipeline simultaneously, each rectifier along the route must interrupt current at exactly the same moment. If timers drift by even a few milliseconds, the “Off-potential” readings at survey points near other rectifiers are contaminated by induced voltages β€” making the data unreliable. GPS synchronization locks every timer to atomic clock accuracy (Β±2 ppm), guaranteeing perfect simultaneous switching regardless of location.
